Sherwood Is building a Pedestrian Bridge at Sunset and 99W
The first of two pedestrian crossing projects has been funded and engineering work has started! A big thanks to all of you in the community who help me communicate the importance of this project to Salem.
There are many reasons why the pedestrian bridge at 99W & Sunset is critical to the future of our community:
Between October 2018 and November of 2019, there were 21,197 traffic safety violations (red light and speeding) at 99W & Sunset
This dangerous intersection is at the interface between vehicles driving at rural highway speeds and urban 45MPH zone.
The new high school will open adjacent to this intersection, requiring our students to navigate six lanes of traffic on a major state highway.
The new school will be just across the highway from the Sherwood Recreation & Aquatic Center (YMCA), the Skate Park, and the Teen Center. The bridge will allow safe access to and between the facilities.
The proposed bridge will connect six current and planned trail systems connecting east and west Sherwood.
The project will literally and figuratively bridge SE and NW Sherwood, connecting our community and enhancing its walkability.
With the help of all of you in the community, we were able to get funding for this bridge. The good news is you will not see an increase in taxes to cover the costs. We were able to secure state lottery money and urban renewal district money fo this project.
We are planning to have this project complete in late 2023 or early 2024
We are also working on an additional crossing at cedar creek. This project will be more expensive, and we are completing initial engineering work so we can start looking for regional, state, and federal dollars to fund the project.
